Meet Study Mum Debrah
Hi my name is Debrah I’m 43 mum of 2 girls aged 4 and 13. I live on the mid north coast of NSW with my husband, girls and 2 high maintenance cats !! I have mostly worked in community services industry in a variety of roles. Right now I’m enjoying my last years studying before my youngest starts school and I make that leap back into the workforce. In fact thinking upon on that this probably won’t be my last years studying at all as I always find something interesting to learn about. As I get older I find it necessary to keep updated and fresh with knowledge. I honestly love reading and learning though and don’t think I’ll ever fully stop studying something.
Currently studying Advanced Meridian Pyschotherapy and Post Graduate Counselling. The Meridian Pyschotherapy may sound new agey but it’s basically Acupuncture without needles. All very fascinating how the mind body and spirit connect.

What I love About My Course:
It’s something I can apply to everyday life both personally and professionally. It’s fascinating and challenges me to think a lot deeper. It’s fun and enjoyable too. It’s taking me in the direction I want to go in.
What I Find Challenging About My Course:
Time management. Some days or nights I will do 5hrs straight on a lecture. There is lots to read and take in. I also need to trust myself a bit more. I often second guess what I’ve written and will stress over it and then rewrite it several times when in actual fact I didn’t need to, costing myself time. So the challenge is to trust myself and what I know.
- Bachelor of Social Science
- Diploma community services
- Cert IV Training and Assessment
- Cert IV holistic counselling

What I Want To Be When I Grow Up:
A happy healthy well adjusted adult. I just want to be able to do things that make me happy and keep me going. Enjoying family and life. To run my own business and be my own boss would be a bonus. I do want to be able to support others when they are going through hard times. I would also love to write a book..someday.
My Best Study Tips And Tricks Are:
- Study something that interests you.
- Be organised, use a calendar or planner
- Know your due dates.
- Don’t study if over tired. Stop. Rest and start again fresh.
- Get sleep.
- Stay hydrated as it helps to stay alert.
- Take time out when you need to.
- I like white noise in the background to study it helps me to focus.
My Biggest Challenge As A Study Mum Has Been:
Fitting everything in. Finding that balance. My girls are both at different ages and stages and both still need strong guidance. So dividing myself equally to them is a challenge.
Plus going through the teenage phase is challenging and testing. There are days when I just want to eat ice cream and drink wine and that’s ok. Mums need alone time too.
I have also learnt to pick my battles and invest my energy in the issues that need it more than others. It’s also ok if the washing isn’t done straight away or the clothes aren’t put away immediately. It will get done some things just take priority.
Self-care is important and knowing your limitations and breaking points so you don’t get burned out or anxious. Deep breaths and taking time for yourself isn’t selfish it’s a necessity.
How I Keep Motivated:
Having an interest in what I’m studying is a motivator. Knowing that it is all worth it and being able to pass that knowledge on to help others is a motivator to keep going.
My Best Advice For Other Mums Who Are Considering Studying:
If you are really interested in studying a particular field or want to make a life change then go for it. You can do it. Age is no barrier either. It’s never too late.
Happy Studying, Deb xx
